Every Thursday, I call my local hospitals (Beacon Memorial in South Bend; St. Joe in Mishawaka; and Elkhart General in Elkhart) and check in on the hospital policies. In the upheaval of the pandemic, I want to make sure I know the latest info and I have what I need in order to practice at the three hospitals closest to me . A few weeks ago, the charge nurse at one hospital laughed to me, “I swear, I have a doula calling every other day right now! Ya’ll are on top of it!”
YES, we are!!
We know how important doula support is to the families we serve.
We know how hard it is to have the uncertainty of a pandemic looming over your head constantly.
We know that parents, nurses, doulas, everybody is sick of not knowing what the policy will be later today, tomorrow, or in a month. Or what the pandemic will look like later today, tomorrow, or in a month.
And I know firsthand what it is like to have to ask myself, “If I only get one person at my birth, do I want my spouse or my doula?”
So yeah, you bet we doulas are on top of it.
Up until now, after I got that weekly update, I shared it with you on social media. But, as we’ve seen this week, social media can go down. So, to make sure you always have access to the most updated information I have access to, you can now check out the new covid-19 page on my website: https://abbythesociologistdoula.com/covid-19/.
I’ll keep updating that page, my IG, and my FB, because I want you to remember that you’re not alone in facing the uncertainty. I am on your team, whether I am your doula or not, and so are countless other birth workers, rooting for you every step of the way and there for you in whatever way we can be.
As doulas, there is so much out of our control in a pandemic, but making sure you know your options?
Yep, we are on top of it.
