Welcome, fellow geeks, to the wonderful world of baby stuff for geeky parents. There are so many options available to you. Forget the wonderful daily stuff (Thor’s hammer in rattle form, onesies that ask “What about second breakfast?”, and more); even the biggest, most ritualized moments can reflect your love of other/alternate/fantastical universes. For examples, we announced our daughter’s existence using a Star Trek onesie (“The Next Generation”), and we called her Padawan (a Star Wars reference) until after birth.
If you’re looking to continue your geeky legacy by naming your kid something awesome, check out these options, arranged by franchise.
Here is a list of every character in the Marvel universe.
Game of Thrones
Here is a full list of GoT characters for you to choose from.
The phenomenon of naming babies after GoT characters became such a big deal that it actually made the news.
Fans of the Doctor can find a great list of baby names here.
[Side note: that site also has an awesome list of baby name ideas from Magic: The Gathering.]
Here is a full list of every Harry Potter name ever, and here’s another that also includes spells, mottos, places, and more.
Lord of the Rings
Here are two lists of Elvish names (#1 and #2) and a short list of Orcish names (in case that’s what floats your boat).
You can find Klingon names here and Vulcan names here. Other Star-Trek-referential names you might consider include these, and if you need even more options, here is a list of all characters in Star Trek, organized by species/organization/occupation/ship or station/origin/military rank/title.
If you’re a Wookie fan, here is a naming guide for Shyriiwook. I couldn’t find a list of Huttese names, but apparently Huttese is based in Quechua, so here are a few lists of Quechua names (#1, #2, and #3). If you don’t need the linguistic tie to the universe but do want the inspiration, here is a list of names drawn from the franchise.
